ROEMY products exclude harmful and potentially harmful chemicals and ingredients. Here's the what and why:
Parabens are antibacterial chemicals that are used to preserve cosmetics and other products, increasing their shelf life and keeping them bacteria-free. Parabens have been linked to a number of health concerns in humans including mimicking oestrogen in our bodies and becoming potential endocrine disruptors — reportedly increasing the risk of breast cancer (though there has since been no conclusive evidence confirming they are directly linked.) Parabens are bad for the environment, showing up in the tissue of marine mammals, polar bears and other sea life. Research has now begun to examine whether parabens cause hormone disruption in wildlife, too. This is ongoing.
Phthalates are used in many fragrances to keep liquid elements suspended and blended and to increase the longevity of scents. Phthalates have been directly linked to reproductive issues in women, reduced fertility in men and have been reported to cause developmental and behavioural issues in children. Phthalates have also been reported to cause liver damage and increase the risk of obesity. This is why you won’t find phthalates in ROEMY fragrances.
While SLS or SLES are seldom found in fine fragrances (which is great), we wanted to ensure it was left out of ROEMY products, too.. Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) is a skin irritant and known carcinogen which is easily absorbed into the body via skin application. SLS and SLES have been linked to breast cancer in women and decreased fertility in men. It’s often disguised as a ‘natural’ product derived from coconut. Ick.
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that have a negative impact on our endocrine system. The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines endocrine disrupting chemicals as an exogenous substance or mixture of substances that alter or cause adverse health effects to one or more functions of the endocrine system – a system made of glands responsible for producing, storing and releasing hormones in our body. EDC exposure can lead to cancer of the reproductive system plus other reproductive and health issues in both men and women.
Petrolatum is often used in fragrances to increase longevity. But, it can often be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are known carcinogens. PAHs can also cause allergies and skin irritation. There are no petroleum or petroleum derivatives in ROEMY products. We achieve long-wearing fragrances by using higher fragrance concentrate, that’s it! Our fragrances sit between 20-25% fragrance concentration, which is the optimum concentration to achieve a premium fragrance that is long-wearing while also allowing you to experience the complexity of each fragrance note.
PEG Silicones are synthetic chemicals that give products a soft, gliding texture. PEG silicones are used to regulate the consistency of products, however this is a chemical that is easily absorbed into the body and has been linked to liver and kidney damage. Silicones are also harmful to the environment as they bio-accumulate. It’s unnecessary to use this chemical in fragrances, so we don’t!
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are organisms that have been artificially altered to change their characteristics, ie. introducing crops with increased levels of commercially beneficial elements in order to increase yields and bring down market prices. The modifications in GMOs are vast, some can be a small tweak while others significant.
Nitromusks are fragrant chemicals that are found in many personal care products and ‘fragrances’. They were synthesized in the early 1900s as inexpensive substitutes for natural macrocyclic musks used in perfumes.
ROEMY products are proudly IFRA approved, which means there are no IFRA prohibited substances in ROEMY fragrances. IFRA prohibited substances
are fragrance ingredients that the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has deemed unsafe for use in fragrance products. The IFRA is an independent regulatory body which performs toxicological research into the safety of fragrance ingredients. In conjunction with the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), the IFRA undertakes comprehensive research on individual fragrance ingredients, in order to develop a set of Standards and Code of Practice for each ingredient. The IFRA will recommend the banning of certain materials or impose limitations if research concludes this is necessary.
The IFRA is an independent regulatory body, ROEMY is not required by law to adhere to these Standards or Codes of Practice, it is our choice.
